Punching above his weight - Takurua Edwards

Takurua Edwards, 17, is one of QRS’s youngest employees, but he has some very mature goals.

The Ngāti Kahungunu tāne started with the company in May 2023. He joined the small crew of staff who carry out cyclic maintenance on highways and is quickly getting over his beginner’s nerves.

“It’s been good. I came here to make some money and get some qualifications and I’m doing that.”

Takurua and the cyclic crew fix potholes and install signs on State Highway 2 and 38. It’s a mobile crew, and given the work environment, the four staff members are loyal, dedicated, and look after each other’s safety and wellbeing.

Takurua says he’s pleased to be in an environment where he can work towards real-life goals including various vehicle licenses. “I’ve been able to work outside and there’s lots of opportunity coming up for me.” Takurua has already earned his chainsaw tickets and site traffic management specialist (universal) qualification.

When he’s not at work Takurua loves training and boxing with the Wairoa Boxing Club. He travels away to tournaments and this year will compete in the 60kg open youth division at the New Zealand Championships. “I’m training three nights a week and I want to win.”
