WORKING on high-value contracts during the community’s time of need means we can help rebuild Wairoa while re-investing in the town and our people, says chief executive Jeremy Harker.

“There’s huge potential for Wairoa’s economic development via the post-Cyclone Gabrielle transport infrastructure rebuild and here at QRS we’re proud to be playing our part.”

Mr Harker’s comments follow the company’s presentation of its six-month report to sole shareholder, Wairoa District Council, today.

The positive financial results to 31 December 2023 reflect the company’s pivotal involvement in rebuilding roading infrastructure, and helping the community recover.

QRS is a sub-contractor on state highway repairs, continues to rebuild and maintain local roads, and is involved in one-off construction projects around the district. The company is also assisting with the development of housing solutions for Wairoa.

QRS earned $24.9m in revenue and made a $2.2m profit in the past six months. The positive performance ensures a regular flow of income back to Wairoa District Council, as well as the opportunity for the company to invest in its own depot, plant, training, and staff development.

It’s also meant the company has been able to distribute $150,000 in sponsorship or work in kind to projects like Gemmells carpark, Gaiety Theatre, and a wide range of events, sports clubs, and children’s activities.

“By focusing on local procurement and investment we can play our role in stimulating economic growth and creating opportunities for locals and community businesses.”

QRS now employs 138 people, compared to 85 people five years ago. The company has poured $4.5m of wages and salaries into the homes of Wairoa families cementing the company as a vital element for keeping the Wairoa district alive and thriving.

Highlights in QRS’s six-month report to December 2023 include the company’s adoption of the Switched On! leadership programme. Switched On! is helping grow staff decision-making, confidence and communication around health and safety. Staff members Jason Te Amo and Rob Ruru were the winners of the inaugural Switched On! Leadership Award.
