Wairoa’s stunning hill top gateway has been reinforced now that a dropout to the side of Te Uhi Hill has been repaired by Quality Roading and Services.
The road-undermining dropout occurred in a heavy rain event in September 2018. QRS carried out the repair work on behalf of Higgins and completed it in June 2019.
The retaining wall is braced by poles up to 10 metres long driven 6m into the ground and concreted into place. The tantalised logs came from Taupō. They are basically whole trees that have been stripped of their bark before being tantalised for use.
For added strength Gabion baskets (stones inside wire baskets) have also been used to stabilse the bank on the town-side of the hill.
