Refuse, recycling and landfill information for Wairoa and surrounding district

Refuse

Refuse collections in the Wairoa district is a user pays service using a sticker system

The required stickers are available from most dairies around the district, and Age Concern.

Pink stickers are for urban (Wairoa and Frasertown) collection and green stickers are for rural collections.

Please use 1 sticker per 7kgs and 2 stickers if more than 7kgs.  Bags can’t be heavier than 14 kgs.

Pink stickers for urban areas Wairoa and Frasertown:
4kg $2.30 each or buy a pack of 5 for $11.50
7kg $3.20 each or buy a pack of 5 for $16

Green stickers for rural areas Māhia, Nūhaka, Mōrere, Māhanga, Te Reinga, Ruakituri:
4kg $2.90 each or buy a pack of 5 for $14.50.
7kg $5 each or buy a pack of 5 for $25

Refuse collections take place along:
SH2 from Wairoa to Kotemaori Settlement Road
SH2 from Wairoa to Morere (the collection point stops at Tunanui Road, Morere)
Tiniroto Road from Frasertown through to Te Reinga and Ruakituri Road
SH38 from Frasertown to Waihi Road

Households living off the state highway may bring their refuse to the state highway for pick-up.

Any plastic bag as long as it holds the refuse you want picked up.

From Wairoa (but not including Wairoa) to Māhia, including Nūhaka and Māhanga: Monday
Wairoa township: Tuesday
From Frasertown (and including Frasertown) to Waihi Road: Thursday
From Frasertown (but not including Frasertown) to Ruakituri, including Te Reinga: Thursday
From Wairoa (but not including Wairoa) to Kotemaori Settlement Rd, including Mōhaka and Raupunga: Friday

Recycling

There is a free kerbside recycling collection in Wairoa on Wednesdays. Free recycling in the rural areas is on the first and third Sunday of each month at the following locations:

Kotemaori: Kotemaori Hall 10am-11.30am
Raupunga: Former fire station 12pm–2pm
Mōhaka: Old pub site 2.30pm–4.30pm
Ruakituri: Opposite school 9am-10.45 am, 2nd Sunday of the month only
Te Reinga: Opposite school 9am-10.45 am, 2nd Sunday of the month only
Nūhaka: QRS metal yard 12 midday- 2pm
Māhia: 376 Kaiwaitau Rd 9am-11.30am

Cans: rinsed aluminium and steel cans
Glass: clean bottles and jars, no lids, no window glass, lightbulbs, glassware, or mirrors
Paper: newspaper, magazines, junk mail, all other clean paper
Cardboard: flatten all boxes, no milk cartons, drink cartons or tetrapaks
Plastics: Types 1-7 rigid containers, supermarket shopping bags and bread bags are okay but no polysterene (including black) meat trays, cling wrap or cling film

Please sort your recycling into plastics, glass, and cardboard to help with efficiency.

Landfill

Wairoa Landfill and Recycling Centre is 1 Fraser St, Wairoa.

Daily 11am–5pm except Thursdays when it is open 9am-3pm.

25 and 26 December
1 and 2 January
Good Friday and Easter Sunday

Yes, but no credit cards.

General refuse: $185 per tonne
Green waste: $60 per tonne
Whiteware:  $3 per item
Cars: $10 per vehicle

Charges are rounded to the nearest $0.50
