'Toots' jumps the ditch

Toots Rowlands 2 canva

After 15 years in Australia Waa ‘Toots’ Rowlands is immersing himself in Maoritanga and life at Lake Waikaremoana.

Toots arrived in New Zealand in 2018 from Perth. His Tuhoe partner was keen to be reunited with family and the pair have settled at Tuai with their children.

Toots says the differences between Perth and Lake Waikaremoana, are of course, marked, but he’s embraced the changes and is enjoying finding out more about himself and the area he lives in.

“It’s good. I am just taking in the vibe. Having been away so long I’m keen to connect with Māoritanga and learn more about it.”

In Perth Toots, 38, worked in roading for the local government, was a meat works slaughterman for seven years, and most recently worked as a brick mason.

When he’s not at work Toots enjoys spending time with family, going to the gym, and walking the tracks at Te Urewera.
