Construction site supervisor Arnold Smith

Arnold Smith canva

Having started work at QRS straight out of Wairoa College, Arnold Smith already has nearly seven years of service as a labourer under his belt . . . and he's only 24.

“It was a great opportunity to get a job right here in Wairoa,” Arnold says, and that's even more important since he and his partner welcomed their first child in May last year.

Arnold is developing his leadership skills so he can have a strong career pathway through the company.

He is currently a construction site supervisor and over the next few months will be completing his Civil Trade Certificate.

Civil Trades Certification is a nationally recognised accreditation programme for civil contractors that blends a trade apprenticeship with thousands of hours of practical experience.

A keen outdoorsman, Arnold helps stock the family cupboard with a bit of hunting, diving and fishing, but says it is no hardship to put that aside when he needs to get on the tools at QRS.

“The way I see it, if you aren't going to go at things with a positive attitude, then you just shouldn't bother,” he says.

“Having a baby has brought it home to me even more how important it is, so I smile every day I come to work.”
