Open day kicks off an extraordinary QRS auction

A 30-tonne excavator and a 40-tonne dump truck, as well as smaller civil contracting machinery, come under the hammer at an extraordinary Quality Roading and Services (QRS) auction this week.

The Wairoa District Council-owned civil contracting company has over 40 items in the auction which began with a three-hour viewing session earlier today. 

Turners, New Zealand’s largest seller of trucks and machines, managed the open morning, and will also manage the week-long online auction, says QRS chief executive Nigel Pollock.

“With large heavy-duty plant we knew we would have a national audience and all the logistical issues that would bring.  Turners was contracted to manage an auction of this scale.”

Auction items include: a 40-tonne dump truck; 30-tonne, 20-tonne, and 7-tonne excavators; a Caterpillar D3 bulldozer, a wood chipper with very low hours, two service body trucks; a mobile generator; a little flat deck double cab truck; and a landfill compactor!

“This is big kit. This is a chance to pick up some well looked after QRS gear surplus to our requirements,” says Mr Pollock.

Mr Pollock is confident there will be strong interest in the auction as contractors all over New Zealand work to improve and develop the country’s roading and rail networks. Small business owners, farmers, and other contracting companies may also find something at the auction for them.

An area of QRS’s Kaimoana Road yard was used for the machinery display this morning, and QRS and Turners representatives were on hand to answer any questions regarding the auction items. The auction catalogue is now available on the Turners website.

In August QRS invested just over $700,000 in new machinery to meet the expanding opportunities in road maintenance and construction and other infrastructure projects. The machines were purchased to increase the company’s current fleet and included two excavators and a 10-tonne roller.

Last month QRS announced a robust turnaround in fortune as revenue at the company was up by $2.4 million to $15.8 million for the 2018 financial year.
