Staff roll up their sleeves for better health

Influenza vaccination montage

Quality Roading and Services staff Alex Little, Epanaia Whatuira, and Tumanako Waiwai rolled up their sleeves in May to receive this year’s influenza vaccine from the visiting Queen Street Practice nurses.

Thirty staff took advantage of on-site influenza vaccinations in a shared effort to stay fit and well for the coming winter months.

Staff wellbeing is a continued focus for QRS with more emphasis now on mental and emotional health, as well as physical health.

Health and capabilities manager Jeremy Harker said with a workforce that reflects the community it was important the company understood wellbeing from the Whare Tapa Wha perspective. The model is based on four pillars: wairua (spirit), hinengaro (mind), tinana (body), and whānau (family).

“It benefits each individual and their whānau, and that has a flow on in the wellbeing of our whole company and the Wairoa community.”

Mr Harker says QRS also provides counseling services for staff through the Employment Assistance Program. As well as the free influenza vaccinations, annual health checks and gym and swimming memberships are also available.

Diesel mechanic Alex Little says he took advantage of the vaccination because “why wouldn’t you?!”

“If someone is offering me a vaccination and it’s going to help keep me safe, well, why would I say no to that?!”
